The Duke Chapter of the American Medical Association (AMA) is an organization dedicated to bringing together physicians and those training to become physicians, as early as medical school, in order to advocate for the profession and our patients in and beyond the doctor’s office or clinic.  Our chapter has grown from an early, small organization to one of the best-represented chapters at national conferences over the past several years, and our activities and the achievements of our members continue to grow.

Our activities bring together medical students, physicians and patients, and the local community in order to educate and advocate regarding important health issues.  We do so by holding community service events; by organizing and participating in policy advocacy activities at the local, state, and national levels; by educating ourselves and others about issues important to health in America and the world; and by arranging social events to bring together a community of physicians and future doctors.

“Together, we are stronger.”  That is the central theme behind the AMA and the Medical Student Section’s (AMA-MSS) work, and the first part of its mission statement.  The organization has a strong history of contributing to medicine and healthcare policy in the US.  As the AMA mission statement states, “The American Medical Association helps doctors help patients by uniting physicians nationwide to work on the most important professional and public health issues.”  We are also a member chapter of the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) and the Durham-Orange County Medical Society (DOCMS).  These are the state and local medical societies that work with us and the national AMA to advocate within North Carolina on a variety of issues.
