DeltAIDS is a philanthropy organization that first originated in 2005. DeltAIDS began as an inter-Greek collaborative effort and became an independent student organization in 2009. Membership is now open to all students in the Duke community. DeltAIDS was founded to battle the challenges presented to mankind by HIV and AIDS by increasing awareness and raising funds for prevention and treatment programs. Additionally, Duke’s regional connection is significant: HIV transmission rates in the United States are highest in the southeast, and particularly in Durham. Historically we have collaborated with other student health and HIV groups on campus including the Red Cross, Generation HIV, and Know-Your-Status.
The bulk of our raised funds are donated to KIWAKKUKI in Moshi, Tanzania. KIWAKKUKI is an NGO established in 1990 in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania and collaborates with the Duke Global Health Institute. The organization targets the interest of local women who wish to act against HIV and AIDS. KIWAKKUKI not only addresses issues that affect women, but also provides care and education to HIV/AIDS orphans and increases awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention. It also works to restore self-respect and self-agency to the lives of individuals and families affected by HIV and AIDS. In March of 2003, KIWAKKUKI began an HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) service with the assistance of Duke collaborators. Not only does KIWAKKUKI educate women and orphans on prevention and coping, but also empowers individuals of the Moshi community to educate themselves, strive for financial stability and seek necessary resources to better their lives.
